Mechanics And Gameplay

Q: How do I get resources?

A: We have changed the system of gathering resources in Only War. Now, you must capture oil derricks in order to gather resource. We feel this makes gameplay more centred about tactics. You must capture the derricks with construction units or Fire Warrior squad leaders (Tau). The derricks are also indestructible. As a result you must fight to hold them and take them from your enemy.

Q: Why are tanks so expensive and why do they take so long to build?

A: In the Warhammer 40 000 universe a majority of combat centres around infantry. This also holds true for modern warfare. Suffice to say, vehicles are very expensive to prevent the building of hordes of them. Vehicles are, indeed, very dangerous, but must be used in conjunction with infantry for best effect.

Q: My infantry don’t do any damage at all to vehicles and structures

A: You NEED to use heavy weapons to damage vehicles and structures. Think of it in modern terms. A soldier with a machine gun will not bring down a huge reinforced concrete bunker. No matter how many thousands of rounds he pumps into it he’ll only chip away at the concrete. Similarly, in Only War you need special weapons to destroy lightly armoured vehicles and heavy weapons for heavy armour.

Q: What about super weapons?

A: We will be using super-vehicles for each faction as opposed to super weapon structures, although special structures will have to be built to bring in these super vehicles.

Faction Specific

Q: What are Space Marines/The Ultramarines?

A: Space Marines are genetically and surgically altered superhuman killing machines. They have faster reactions, more strength, better perception, a sharper mind and more durability than a normal human. Encased in their power armour they stand an imposing 7’ tall. Space Marines are organised into chapters, each one consisting of around 1000 Space Marines. Each chapter has its own home world, fortress monastery (base of operations), support equipment, space fleet and heavy support vehicle armada.

The Ultramarines are one such chapter, and possibly one of the best known. They reside in the region known as Ultramar. It is an idyllic region founded on sound planning and logic. Their clean cities and grassy plains are a far cry from the inhospitable industrial wastes of many imperial forge worlds. Their combat doctrine is one of strict discipline and adherence to the Codex Astartes. They have proven on countless occasions to be an exceedingly effective and well organised fighting force.

Q: What is the Imperial Guard/Who are the Cadians?

A: The Imperial Guard is the largest military organisation to ever exist. At any moment there are countless billions of Imperial Guardsmen stationed on millions of worlds ready for combat. They are the lifeblood of the Imperium and their massive divisions are the hammers of almost every engagement in Imperial history. Each world in the Imperium is required to maintain its own armies of imperial guard.

The Cadians are one of these armies. They are primarily stationed on the world of Cadia, an Imperial fortress world on the borders of the Eye of Terror. They have fought off countless Chaos incursions from the Eye and are immensely courageous and determined fighting force. Their armies are known for logical combat discipline and sound tactics. They are regularly sent to quell uprisings on many worlds as their reputation marks them as exceedingly effective at this task.

Q: Who are the Tau?

The Tau are a new race In the Warhammer 40 000 universe. They are young and passionate and ignorant to the immense dangers and evils of the universe. Their technology is already more advanced than that of the Imperiums, quite an accomplishment considering that they have only been developing for a few hundred years.

They favour ranged combat over close combat and have some very powerful weapons. To advance on them under their firepower is suicide. Their vehicles are lightly armoured but very well armed and extremely fast, as a result they are quite capable of launching lightning fast and very deadly assaults. They also favour the use of robots in battles; the hovering machines are very fast, well armoured and armed and offer deadly fire support.

Their people are organised into a rigid caste system, their ruling caste are the Etherials. The Earth caste deals with managing their worlds, manufacturing equipment, and construction. The Air caste operates aircraft and space vessels. The Fire caste fights the battles for the Tau.

The Tau believe In a greater good for all their people, they believe that their every fight is seeking to bring this enlightenment to others and protect their people from outsiders. They gladly assimilate other cultures into their society, for example the Kroot are a race of cannibalistic savages that have formed a partnership with the Tau. Their forces compliment each other on the battlefield; the Tau provide withering ranged fire, whilst the Kroot are lethal close combat assailants and specialise in assaults.

Use Of Units

Q: There’s loads of infantry choices. What’s best against what?

A: For The Imperial Guard and Space Marines:

Tactical squads are the generic all purpose squads of both factions, use them to bulk up your forces and tackle large numbers of enemy infantry.

Special Weapons squads are mainly used to crack very powerful enemy infantry or large hordes, for example: Space Marine terminators or Imperial Guard squads.

Heavy Weapons/Devastator squads are used to destroy enemy vehicles and structures. They are very expensive and slow, but their firepower provides essential support against vehicles.

For the Tau:

Fire Warriors have the longest ranged general weapon of all factions. Their Fire Warrior squads can easily wipe out enemy infantry.

Drones are used for construction and attacking. The standard gun drone is armed with twin linked pulse carbines that provide Fire Warriors with fast moving deadly fire support.

Pathfinders are the Tau scouting units, whilst lighter armoured than standard Fire Warriors, they are faster and have the capability of being equipped with rail rifles. Rail rifles offer Tau infantry with heavy support to destroy vehicles and structures.

Stealth Suit Teams infiltrate the enemy forces and unleash withering firepower at close range. They are well armoured and have very powerful rapid-fire weapons.

Q: How should I use Vehicles?

A: In Only War vehicles are used as mobile gun platforms and transport. They provide infantry with heavy support against enemy vehicles and have the capacity to destroy structures.

Vehicles are rarely seen in engagements on their own, they are best used in conjunction with infantry. There are few exceptions to this rule such as the Imperial Guard Steel Legion that specialises in mechanised combat, utilising many transport vehicles and large numbers of armoured vehicles to overwhelm and annihilate their opponents.
